I like Digital Story telling project, because it is new experience for me, it’s not academic, let me remember old happy days and force me to learn a new application on my Mac which is iMovie. Because I have traveled to Auckland, New Zealand, so I didn’t have difficulties to get picture for my project and the picture from the web was from google.com, which allow us to search fast whatever we are looking for. I was interested in telling my story in attracting the attention of watchers; therefore, I rewrote my story several times. The challenge was how to combine the picture I have to fit with my story and find good picture from the Internet fit to my story also. There are many similar aspects between writing an academic essay and DST. First of all, the transaction in the DST is movement and in writing it is words. Second, avoid plagiarism in both of them. The different is DST is alive and writing is boring.
To avoid plagiarism in DST is very easy because you create your own ideas and story from your mind. I used some picture from the Internet and it is not mine so put the like for the picture to have the permission to use the picture. I learned to give credit to the owner of the things. We have learned a lot of plagiarism rules; therefore, it was easier for me to avoid it in DST.

This video digital story project is kind of free assignment that we can create and appear our feelings and thinkings without limiting rules, but it requires students to use intellectual property to avoid plagiarism and academic misconduct. We have been learning academic misconduct and plagiarism since long time ago. We should used intellectual property at the end of this project. I used lots of pictures from internet sites, not from my own picture. It means I required to write reference resources to complete this project without any misconduct or against academic rules. I almost used over 25 pictures from internet. Mostly, I did reference resources and posted at the end of the video except few pictures. While I was doing this project, I realized that I should do posting or writing copywrite not only when I write essay and writing assignment, but also when I do video project and any other project if I use resources from internet, book, or even other people's opinions. As a result, I learned a lot of things again, and this project remind me again to do reference resources!

While I work digital story, I could not ignore without license even if it was really good picture or music. The things I have been studying is about plagiarism and forbidden copying from other's work. Also, I have learned a lof of using intellectual property that I should not plow with other people's work like put a comment or credit for distinguishing the copyright. Althought copying a work without obtaining permission may appear to be an easy way to accomplish the work, but such unauthorized copying can frequently viloate the right of the author or publisher of the copyrighted work.

Through those ten questions about plagiarism. The first question and the second question are pretty interesting me because I always confuse about the common knowledge and what is wrong in rewriting my old paper or copying the sentences from my own paper. The first question asks me that I found out I had a same assignment as last time. And it was a longer paper than last time. So if I added a few sentences from my old paper, was I plagiarizing from myself? What I would do for that? I chose to ask the teacher whether I can revise my old paper and got permission from the teacher that I would not get in trouble for doing that. I used to don’t think that much about plagiarism. I don’t think copy the sentences from my own work is plagiarism. Because it is my own work, it is written by me, why I can’t put my old opinion to the paper. But I realized that I don’t learn anything from just copy the old sentences and put them into my longer paper. I should be respect to my assignment and my instructors, because the purposes of the assignments are made for helping me to think and learn.
For the second question, it is about whether we should cite the common knowledge or not. I have a similar experience when I was in high school. I just learn about breast cancer during the class, and we need to make a presentation for that. But all I knew about the information of breast cancer are all from the textbook. So I didn’t put any reference and citation in the end of my PowerPoint. I was assuming everybody knows where were those information came from. But I got a warning from my teacher said even it was from textbooks, they still need to be cited. Those two questions attracted me when I first read this tutorial. It was a challenge for me to adapt to plagiarism when I was in high school, but I am glad that I learned those from my high school.

should you cite it or not? I undoubtedly thought it is no but the answer was Yes. " the reason was common knowledge" is like any different sort of knowledge, so you have to cite it. I was really surprised because in Korea, plagiarism is usually about only the others by implication. when you write an essay from books, you don't need to cite the source. Korean thinks it is okay because "common knowledge" is prevailed information.
In this question, the answer is totally different from Korea. It is so lucky that i know about citing "common knowledge" before i do a mistake in any writing. It can be an issue in my school work. If i didn't know it, i would do as same style in Korea then i did a plagiarism unintentionally.
Another question that i was surprised is question number 4. it is about the group work. it says if one of your members gave you an good idea, what are you doing? the answer is you have to indicate the source. it was really interesting answer for me too. i thought since it is 'group' work, individual can be ignored but it was not. you have to express the source even though it is group project. i learned from this that if i am not sure about the plagiarism, I'd better cite it and there are many differences between my home country, Korea and America so i should learn them and understand them.

The Online tutorial, which is created by Dr. Bloch, is very helpful in understanding plagiarism. This tutorial is very good source of information for me because it helped me understanding properly the rules of plagiarism and how should I work in order to prevent plagiarism. With the help of this tutorial it describes different situation in front of student and it would help student to understand the rules of plagiarism properly. I found question 3 and 4 interesting. In question 3 Dr Bloch has proposed a scene in which a student found reference of the article but he is not able to find the book in which the article is stated so what should the student do does he need to cite the author or not. I would say that the student should not use the article because he is not able to find the book and if he has not read the book then there might be some ethical issues. And he would not give a proper idea about the book. The student should search for the book and if he gets the book then only he should use the idea or else he should use another idea. In question 4, I would say if you are given a opportunity to discuss about an issue before writing an essay then the whole group would discuss ideas and it would lead into reoccurring of ideas in the essay of that particular group members. The reason why I can use the ideas it is that the purpose of group discussion was that to discuss the ideas with each other. Thus the conclusion given by that particular group is going to come same. And if a student can’t do this then what was the reason for sharing the ideas in a group before writing the essay.
Thus I would say that the tutorial created by Dr. Bloch is very helpful for me, as it has helped me in understanding the proper rules of plagiarism.

The most interesting thing in this tutorial is a question 6 which is asked that if professor has taken student’s course writing for a course, is that a plagiarism or not. I surprised that the answer is ‘yes’. The reason is that everything I write down a paper, it belongs to me, and therefore, copying a paper written for class is the same as copying a paper that is published. Also, I realized that I should fully understand my paper. This is why I think that all the students who studying in America should deeply study about plagiarism before attend any school. In addition, I was touched by question 5 which is whether do post contents with cut and paste from internet is bad or not. The answer says that the quotation should be represented in paper copy from other contents such as internet or book. Before I have learned plagiarism, I have thought put quotation or cite in writing is not only empty formalities and vanity. However, I realized the writing without a boundary between inventive idea and copied idea, there is not a real writing with learning various cases of plagiarisms in this tutorial website.
To sum up, I believe people should always aware to distinguish which one is mine, and which one is others’ when they work on paper in every single time.

I found question 3 and 5 interesting . In question 3, Dr. Bloch proposes the situation asking what students should perform to cite the article where the author uses the idea from the other article and the source of the idea can not be found. In order to meet the situation, students can avoid the accusation by showing the fact that they cite the property. This type of problem is difficult to determine whether it can be plagiarism or not because the person who violate “secondary citation” rule should not always be punished: the reason why the pathway to the original can not be found can be the situation that the author just forgot to attribute to the original source. When I was about to write the lab report in Japan, I often use the way. I searched what I need to know from the textbook or some sources which contain what they call “common knowledge” , then I trace the original recourse from the reference lists on the textbooks. The act was not regarded as plagiarism in Japan at all, however it can be punished in US.
Next, question 5 provides the case that students forget in which article an opinion derived from a set of data. Students are expected to give up citing it directly then search the other thesis discussing a similar topic and find the answer from the article. Though it is obviously illegal to cite the meaning to the data without citation, it is difficult for me to understand why we need to give up citing that only because of forgetting where the interpretation comes. If you remember the data belongs to some article, it should be allowed to cite it with showing such as “this interpretation to the data was cited, and it is not my idea.”
blog 7
After I finish doing those ten questions online (www.esl.osu.edu/staff/bloch/plagiarism), I feel its very avail. For example, the question 3 describes the secondary citation. It is talking about citing article from another article and you can’t find out if it is copy from the original article. I never hear it from my country so I think it is a very interesting topic. In China, where I come, even though it’s incorrect to cite others’ views word by word, many college students download many pieces of paper online and use them in their paper without changing the words. This behavior in America would be regarded as plagiarism and the students who did it would get punished. However, many Chinese students always get rid of this punishment because professors always ignore this problem so that students could graduate easily. So, it is sometimes difficult for us to remember the rules of the plagiarism and sometimes we would easily use others’ ideas without explaining whose idea it is. So it is a little different. It is not a strict plagiarism but if you take the citation, it will have highly risk.
Question 4 is mainly talking about using other’s idea. This question ask about if some times I discuss with a group and I am interesting in someone’s idea, can I cite the idea like I cite the idea from a paper. In my opinion, we can not use other people’s idea directly. If you want to use it, you must cite it as you cite other normal paper or you can explain that this idea is your group’s idea. I don not think it has a big challenge because if you cite it as “personal communication”, you can easily avoid the plagiarism. I do not want to get in trouble so I would like to change another idea and in this way, other people would not consider it plagiarism.

In the questionnaire, there are two questions which are my most concerned issues associated with common knowledge and self-plagiarism. Firstly, in the question #1, Dr. Bloch describes a situation whether student can use their own paper as another course’s assignment paper. The other question is #2 which addresses the concept of common knowledge. In America, even though using their own work and the content of textbooks, students still have to cite the sources in a proper specialized way as the same way of citing other kinds of formal resources. Otherwise, student may be accused by plagiarism. Because of cultural differences, in China the rules of academic work are not as strict as American. Chinese students feel free to use their own work and the common knowledge without citation.
From this course, I’ve learned various types of plagiarism which help me a lot to prevent academic misconduct in my further study.
Blog #7
Question 2 attracts my attention with very common situations. this question talks common knowledge, so do not know using citation or not. The answer is clear. We should use citation even it is common knowledge. In this question, I know what is correct answer. However, I always wonder how can I distinguish between common or not. Also, I wonder that these common idea can be used cite or not even it is common knowledge in a new field. However, question 2 shows how to prevent plagiarism in the new field. Common knowledge also same as other intellectual properties, so it is not mine. Thus, using citation is the best way to avoid plagiarism. Also, question 3 shows secondary citation which do not include original writing's credit in the reference, and the best way to solve this problem is searching other articles or if there are few writing which related with topic, I can use it with appropriate citation. I do not think about this situation because a article without quotation considers their own idea, and many article do not include appropriate citation on their blog especially. So, I confuse that article on the internet without credit is their own word or not. Many writing is shared on the Internet in Korea, and a lot of writing do not include appropriate citation in the article. So, students do not use credit because it is shared writing.
Through this 10 questions, I learned new strategy to prevent plagiarism. not only common knowledge in the text book but also secondary citation are should be use citation to avoid academic misconduct or plagiarism.

The number 2 question talked about the common knowledge which uses by many people. Sometimes you have to write a research paper and you are a new student who always his background comes from textbook. You are not very sure if you should cite common knowledge or not. Some people think that common knowledge can be shared by anyone without a citation. But, other people disagree with them because they say that common knowledge still belongs to someone who wants his ideas to be citied. Personally I believe that depends on the situation; for example, if you want to be more clearly with your professor and you have to show him that you are working hard by finding the sources and citing them. Therefore, the answer of the Web site was that you need to cite the information from the textbook you read.
The last question is number 4 is more difficult than the first one. This question mentioned that for instance there is a group of students and they discuss some ideas which related to same homework. If one member of the group said an interesting idea would you take it and write it down. This question has two differences opinions. One side believes that the purpose of the group is to share ideas and students don't need to cite them. On the other hand, others consider that as a plagiarism because it belongs to that person and students can cite it as "Personal communication". Actually, I agree with the last group who think that if you take an idea from others, you need to cite it.

I learned two rules from those 10 questions, one is citing the original article and the other is citing the idea discussed in a group as "personal communication" to avoid committing misconduct or plagiarism.

I read through these questions and I’m surprised about many of them. Some of the question I didn’t able to answer and I was wondering do they really consider that a plagiarism. The most interesting question is question 4. I find it reasonable.
In question 4, you are in study group and you want to discuss the subject. Everyone came up with new idea to share and discuss. You found a good idea from another student and you want to mention the idea in your paper, Do you think that consider as a plagiarism or not and why?
On my opinion this is can be good you are away from suspicion because you were in-group discussing idea and share the same idea. Yet, in the default answer dr. Bloch addresses this is fade we can not consider it as plagiarism or not, we don’t know some of then consider it as plagiarism and some not, the main goal from making group is sharing ideas and you don’t have to cite it unless it is written down by someone. I learn if somebody make group that, we will have to use the idea within the group, because we are group and this is the goal for that. It isn’t challenging for me, because it reasonable rule and it will be helpful for students. I don’t think I will face this issue in my academic life.
The second interesting question is question 3. In question 3, you were reading and you find that the article is good for you, but the problem is the article refers to another article and you can’t reach the main one. Anyone can use it and cite for the seconded article without it copying and wording. Dr. Bloch states this is consider as plagiarism and you can’t take peril for this even if you cite it. On my opinion, there is no risk to do that if I cite it as the second one, because we don’t know for who is the idea is it for first author or the second. I find this issue is challenging and should be changed. It will affect my educational life, because when I need the information I will use it and cite as the second one.

For many students, the information from the textbook is some common knowledge which doesn’t need to be cited. Or they just don’t want to do that. They think that is an unnecessary and useless behavior. And it is not a big deal in most time. However, the world is full of surprises. Maybe some authors or professors see your paper when they have a very bad day and then get very angry because you are a potential plagiarism criminal. So, it’s not just a challenge for me, but a big potential challenge for every student. This situation is quite different from my educational culture. First of all, in my country, nobody will think that somebody use some common knowledge without cite the resource is a plagiarism behavior. Even a professor accuses a student who doesn’t cite the common knowledge resource has a plagiarism problem; the dean will prefer to give this student another chance and call that professor as a “trouble maker” in private. Second, in China, our culture always prefers to give people another chance. We understand that some people made mistake, just because they don’t know rules. We don’t like destroy a person’s life or future in some simple and unreasonable way. I see a lot of culture conflicts between Chinese and western people. The first one says that the innocent is not the one to blame. The last one says that rules is rules. For me, it would not be an issue for me. As Chinese people said that Smart guys know the ins and outs. I don’t want to have any academic troubles in this strange country. So, I will cite everything I can.

For me, he should find more pictures, not just his own life but also that history period. Maybe he can make his voice pace up and down. His voice should be strong and full of resistant emotion when he talked about he was throw into the prison. And his should be relax and calm when he talked about some peaceful period. By doing this, his audiences can experience the same feel as he lived during that time. And the song of background should be changed to make his prisoner life sounds more exciting and dangerous. He could pay more attention on his prison life. That must be more attractive. Come on, it’s a political prisoner’s tough life, not a pupil go to a boring picnic with a boy scout or something like that. He has a very good theme. This person should let his video be very exciting and pull everyone who watched this video into his prison life.

In my opinion, especially culture play important role as plagiarism. this is because, in Korea campus life, I did not have any concept of plagiarism before here. plagiarism is not big deal in Korea university. Just few student use citation, otherwise many student illegally use other author's article, so did I. No one no point out writing which do not mention references even clearly exist authorship. Thus, we cultivate few plagiarism or ignore notion of it. However, these concepts are not complicate after understand. Essay written by others is not mine, so if I need to use others, just mention it because it is not mine, and thus I can be set free from plagiarism.

Blog 6, Writing Self Evaluation(DongJin Li)
I think that I understand rules of the plagiarism. It’s not big different with Chinese rules in some serious academic institutions. Culture is not a big deal in this issue. Some universities just imagine that every student knows what is right and what is wrong. However, that is just what they think. The truth is that most of students don’t know exactly whatever the rule is. The only thing we need to do and we can do is clear the rules.

Blog #6 difficulties of writing
In China, people give more focus on the writing skills rather than the academic norms involved with plagiarism. Therefore, I knew few concepts of academic misconduct even I was a senior student in a university. As a consequence of the inadequate concerns of academic misconduct, I just got a warning of using a professor’s critical essay to support my own idea in a dissertation without proper citation. Personally, the primary reason of this phenomenon is cultural differences. Specifically, different cultures have different specialized concepts of academic misconduct and different custom. Consequently, cultures do play an significant role in academic lives.

Plagiarism is a common topic in school, whatever in primary school or college.I think this topic is open-minded and we should not concentrate the punishment on it.Because plagiarism is a indifferent deal for us .Everyone has acted on plagiarism.Because the konwledge it self is first comes out by few people and they share it,then more and more people learn from it and may come up with new konwledge from it.All that in our mind is the konwledge accepted by most people. So, for plagiarism there should be 2 kinds. One is what I have said and another is the person intend to act plagiarism to get a faster way to finish some work. And in China I believe most of us is belong in the second kind. But there is also a important reason why students do plagiarism so commonly I think is because they do not think much of the konwledge which their plagiarism in.If there is a excting idea comes up in ones mind I believe he won't act plagiarism anymore because he own his own idea. This person is different from the person who want to finish the work fast by plagiarism. And finally, if someone tells you culture do play a role in the plagiarism, then I think it's an perfect excuse-------because plagiarism is base on the person's deceiving mind but not those cultural differs.
Thanks.

I come from China, so my first language is Chinese, one of the most beautiful and hardest languages in the world. In my high school, I major studied two kinds of writing; narrative writing and argumentative writing. The difficult thing is when you writing an argumentative writing, you need find a power example or a famous person’s words to prove your issue and it is hard to find a suitable proof and illuminate it. If you can not find a good example, your argumentation will be overthrown easily. While, in some aspects, those are similar with writing in English, but most are different. In some argumentative writings or summary articles, you can not use other people’s words or some sources straightly or without acknowledgement. That would be a plagiarism! Furthermore, I think I need more practice about words. I always use the same word in an article and make it very humdrum. The most useful lesson I learned is use descriptive words and informative words to summary an article. It is very important in a summary.
In my opinion, students should pay attention to plagiarism and academic misconduct because it is very significant for people when they writing article. I confused with citing other people’s words and paraphrase. In China, people do summary or writing an argumentative writing, they can use some of the author’s words or use some proofs straightly. But it is plagiarism at here. I think culture plays a very important role. In “Cheating Across Cultures”, written by Elizabeth Redden, describes the reason why International students plagiarism and I think that because different cultures have different rules. If there are no culture differences, the international students would not plagiarism in their articles. Meanwhile, different teaching style and language barriers also can cause students cheating, so that’s why I think culture plays an important role.

I think that the difficulty between my first language and English is that they have totally different grammars. My first language is Taiwanese, Mandarin and a little bit Japanese. Every time I write, I always have a lot of ideas for my papers, but I don’t have a well organization to put them together. They always fall apart in my articles. I am also weak in memorizing vocabulary. I need to know more vocabularies that I can do well on paraphrasing sentence avoiding academic misconduct. In Taiwanese, every word has different meaning, and combines two words is going to be another word or sometimes it is a totally different thing. There is a lot word made by A-Z alphabets in English, I sometimes get confuses about the words, such as inspired, insipid, except and expect. They look the same for me when they don’t show up together. I expect that we can do more practice on vocabulary and how to organize articles. Descriptive and informative words are the most useful thing that I learn from the class. I don’t know how to write academic papers before I took this class. I used casual words on my every academic paper. After taking this class, I think I am ready for writing academic papers in my rest of years in OSU.
In my opinion, I think plagiarism is a harsh rule. It is not supposed to be an acceptable thing in any other countries. I couldn’t totally understand why people try to cheat on it, but I strong agree with Bedden‘s points that she made in her article, “Cheating across culture”. Culture affect people‘s thoughts and behaviors. For example, copyright is not a serve rule in China but you will get trouble if you are in America. Just like Stanley Fish mentions in his article, you have to fellow the rule that the communities made for you.
Blog assignment # 6 - Junghyun Hong
In the Korean university, there are just few cases which are punished by university as plagiarism. Korean professors and students are likely to revise other words exactly as an expression of their respect. Therefore, if university finds same words or sentences with other book or article in their students’ writing, they don’t punish them usually. Students would be punished when they copy the whole part of other’s writing. However, in USA, it looks like that own words and voice in someone’s writing are considered as an important part of writing. For example, universities severely punish their students who revise other’s word even one sentence. I think someone who is living and studying in other country should follow their rule and culture, so, they should try to write in their own words and any other’s words with quotation marks or proper citation.

It is very important in this world to learn a second language in order to have a communication with people for different country. Now a day English speaker has increased to a great extent, it has become one of the common language that is used when people travel to other country. My native language is Hindi. There are two main difference in Hindi and English, Firstly, in English we write Subject-Verb-Object while in Hindi we the words comes out with Subject-Object-Verb. Secondly in Hindi the Preposition comes after the noun. Moreover, Indian accent vary greatly as compared to American accents because in India they teach British English.
Plagiarism is one of the most important topic which is going these days in American university. Plagiarism has a lot many numbers of rules like citing the author, use of quotes, etc. This problem is occurred because of the cultural difference in education across the world. For example, In my country people used to copy lab journal and would get good grade. They have a concept of plagiarism in my country but the rules are not strictly followed. In India there is no rule that you need to cite the author when you are taking the ideas from someone’s article. Due to this habit of coping someone’s work or not citing the author while taking the central idea of his article a lot of students land in academic misconduct. In the article “Cheating across Culture” the author Timothy said that international student has a peer pressure of maintaining their GPA in order to maintain their visa.
