Hi Class,
Welcome to the 106 class blog - "New Start" First, you will begin writing about yourself and your life and educational pursuits. Then, we will begin writing about matters of academic conduct and how your view them from your perspective. Of course, we will also continue our writing about digital stories, a new genre using digital media.
The purpose of blogging is to develop fluency in your writing on different topics. We will not do numerous drafts of each blog; rather, you will post your blog and I will check it for length and appropriate content. Each blog is worth about 1 percent of your grade, so try to do a good job but focus on content. I will expect that as the quarter progresses, you will get more accurate and organized in your writing.
I have been teaching here at OSU for six years now and have taught 106 numerous times. I also have taught in the ALP program once and for several years in the Spoken English program. While teaching, I completed my MA TESOL, to qualify me for instructing foreign students. This year, I have been focusing my teaching in the area of composition. I like the creativity required of teachers as well as the opportunity to interact with students of different cultures. I also enjoy working with technology in my teaching and finding new ways of engaging students in classwork.
I am married and have two children in HS, Joseph and Daniel. My wife is a Korean American, having been raised most of her life in Indiana. We met in our church here in Columbus. Although I have lived most of life in Ohio, my family and I have traveled pretty extensively in Asia, visiting my wife's homeland in Korea (CheongJu) and also lived for almost a year in Dalian, China (where I got my "new start" to a career in English teaching at Dalian Ligong Daxue - University of Technology). That was an experience I will never forget. I got to learn a new culture and meet many new friends as well as grow with my family. Each time I have traveled has been in a sense a "New Start" to my life in some way.
I have also been to South Korea numerous times for short visits. The last was during the Summer of 2008 when my wife's family traveled to Korea to tour from Seoul to Daejeon, Sorak Mtn to Gyeongju. It was a great time to learn more about my wife and here family's culture. Last year, I went to Peru with my boys and participated in a construction project on a school for Quechua speakers to learn the Bible. This was a new start in experiencing another part of the world besides Asia.
Right now, I enjoy time with my kids, they are my number 1 hobby and I try to encourage them in their music, sports and school. My son is in the Jerome High School Marching Band and my younger son is running on the Cross Country team. This is one value of American schools that you try to provide a well-rounded education. They also try to teach children integrity in their studies and incorporate modern techniques as well as an emphasis on test-taking (OGT, ACT, SAT).
That is a little about me and my family. I look forward to learning about you and yours. Please write this first blog of 300 words about your background, education, family and goals around the theme of a new start. Also mention some "NEW START" you have experienced or are experiencing. Also include just 1 picture. The picture I have included is from my trip to visit my brother in LA this summer. It is at the site of the MASH TV series in Malibu. (maybe you have seen reruns!) I look forward to hearing about you!
