I read Sunghun's story"Go Buckeyes" , this is a interesting story with deep buckeye style. Soon i found out it's their love, so many people love football, also it's buckeye's honor.I want to know the process of entering and going out. because there is too many people.

another one i read is "A Trip of Shanghai World Expo” As a chinese i know expo is a huge project。I have been there about half year ago, many subjects record in Yixue's blog was ever in my eye. Expo is really beautiful, through Yixue's blog, i have that strong feeling again.

The same as you, it's diffcult way to come to american. when was in hongkong airport , i meet i really big problem, which can be the biggest problem i have ever meet. When i was told to make i DTS, this thing come into my head immediately, i decide to make my DTS around this topic.
I have a planed to go with other 18 students to OUS and i meet them at airport. When i entered the waiting room, the stuff didn't allow me in. they said that i have to show my "HK permit". I show my passport to them but they said it's useless. When i enter HK, i use the "HK permit" to enter and after that my parents said when a enter the airport the passport is enough so they took away my HK permit. What's more, there is only one phone can be used in hongkong, and i carry it. when i rush out of the waitting room, my parents already gone. There is no choice for me except putting off my trip. after that i sent message to my parents, when they cellphone can use their saw my message and sent my HK permit back, finally i could get on plane.

When I decided to study in American, I knew that there will be lots of challenges waiting for me. I tried to prepare for all of that, but when those troubles shocked my life, I realized that I can never prepare for everything.

The first trouble arrived when I was in HONGKONG airport, which might be the biggest problem I have ever met yet. When I entered HONKKONG,I used my Permit for Proceeding to Hong Kong and Macau which is commonly known as “two-way exit permit” to get the permission. But before I entered the airport my father told me passport is enough , so they took away my two-way exit permit. But what happened next proved that my father was wrong. The staff said I must show my HK permit, because only the permit can prove how I entered HK. When I got out of the airport, my parents had left. What’s more, there was only one phone which could be used in HK, unfortunate, I carried it but my parents didn’t .Thus there was no chance for me to get in touch with my parents in time. The only choice left was putting off my trip and sending a message to my parent to make sure they knew what happened to me When my parents got out of HONGKONG they saw the short message I left for them several hours later. They sent my permit back so I successfully caught the next day’s airplane.

After arriving at OSU, everything was unfamiliar. even eating in osu restaurant was different. I didn’t know I should handle the things left after finishing my meals, I didn't know what exactly the food is and what name it is, didn’t know what I took back from Target was coffee beans instead of soluble coffee. I didn’t know how to enter the morrill tower when there are two huge travelling bags with me.

But all of above wasn't a big deal. What was really a big deal is adjusting to the food. Since I arrived, I had diarrhea for more than two weeks. After two week’s suffering, I decided to make food by myself. I bought an electric cooker, rice vegetable, noodles, meat, and made food by myself. I learned how to make food on internet and it did work. In fact it was my first time to make food, so it doesn’t taste good, but my upset stomach went away. After I had so much experience in cooking, I held a dinner party which served several chafing dish. Many Chinese came to my room and tasted my food, which made me feel proud.

Another thing that drove me crazy was my chemistry lab! I dropped the GEO 200 to take my CHE121 class, so I miss the first chemistry lab class! Then I found how many things I have missed. My TA told me I should go to the CHE 1000 room. I needed my TA’s signature to set up an account and then I can enter the CHE 1000 to see some safe video after that, but my TA was not on work hours, I went straight to the CHE1000 room for help and another TA said he can sign his name for me so I finally can get the video. After that I was given a drawer, which was the last one of my laboratory. When I found it, there was no lock on it. I had to get my TA’s permission which can prove I need a lock. And this time, other TA’s permission doesn’t work. So I got my lock 2day after that when I sew my TA.

It was just an short time after arriving here but I know this story will continue for a long time in the future and I will try my best to make it wonderful.

I come from china. In china i start to learn english when i was 9. It has been long time since i learnt english. There are still lots of trouble for me when i using it after arriving US. When i was in primary school, i found that many things i cann't write down because i don't know how. Now i meet this problem when i'm using english. Vocabulary, that is the biggest problem. But it was just that. The changing of the words it's really hard to control. When i focus on make a sentence, tense often been forgotttn.Tense like simple past tense, progressive tense, present perfect tense, past perfect tense are really tough thing to learn it。
In the article “Cheating Across Cultures”,the writer discribe many things which was the turth in my opinion。In fact in china, copy the original text is important way to show our respect to the resource. For this reason, we recite lots of article and inthis way to show the respect。What‘s more, recite all article seems more important than get the idea。But when i came to US,i was told that it’s plagiarism, that turth really shock me。i realize that the culture background it's really a big problem for our international students. If we don't pay much more attention to this, we might be assumed plagiarism.

The question “In a peer discussion group, you were asked to discuss your paper before you started writing it. One of the members of your group gave you an interesting idea. Do you need to cite the idea in your paper just as you would cite a quotation from a paper?” is the one of queation i interested. I have been confused about it for long time. When we disscuss with others, there always new idea come up in our mind, and the new one would lead to another new one. i believe this part of idea can be the most valuable one. When we use it, how can we do to avoid the suspicion of plagiarism. that question give me the answer. Those idea can be use in our paper, for safety wec can cite personal communication on it.

Another interesting question is:"
In your 108 course, you are asked to write a research paper. You are new in the field, and much of what you know is from textbooks. This information is called common knowledge, and you don't know if you are supposed to cite it."we are fresh men, so we might face this problem in real world. in fact in china those knowledge be use in any place withour citing, because it's common knowledge, it's just in the book, teacher know where it's, so we don't matk it. but in here, that would be plagiarism, because it has copyright.if i don't do this question, i might be assumed plagiarizing.

when i made my DTS, there are lots of trouble i met. First one is dealing with my voice. i record my voice but when i edit it i found out that only one side have sound! It 's a big problem, and i still can not solve it.so i have to make the Dts story with only on side have sound that really uncomfortable. i plan to make my story funny but there is 3 different topic in my story and they are in different style. so i decide to use three different music with it. But that was simple like it look like. first i have to decide which part should use which music.i seclet three music: mission impossible, music of mario and a music i heard in a game which have no name.after that i have to use Audacity open it. and cut i part which should just that long as one story in my DTS. Then i should paste it in my voice mp3 file.after do this for three time, i almost finish the sound part.but i found out that the music it too noisy, so i reduce it. it's challenge but really interesting, because i solve those problem. it feel good, really good. No body dealing the sound part as good as me! that's a different thing with writting a paper. it's power then the paper.i know both of it transmit information. but as a story, use the really picture and your voice can let the listener feel much more close.

Intellectual property is also a big problem for me. i found some really good picture.but when i found it,i didn't record the website i found it.when i do the final step i discover it.i try to found it again but i fail. So i have to change the picture. through this DTS, i Know how to quote the resource, and in fact it's the first time i make something with copyright.

In my digital story, I described my own experience of a trip of Shanghai World Expo. Because of this grand pageant and the company of my family, I have got so many details and emotions to express that I finished the story script without any problem. However, when getting forward, I met various challenges involved with the usage of software. The first problem I’ve got is the editing of the voice by using “Audacity”. Secondly, there were several specific difficulties while I was making the video. Even though I have had enough good quality pictures of this trip, the process of managing the order of the images and matching the voice and the images accurately are still complicated and time- consuming. The last difficulty is to add music into the video. I spent a whole night to find glorious and bright music to express the emotion and atmosphere of the travel. The most exciting and cheerful moment would be the first time of watching through the video after finishing it. At that moment, I felt successful and satisfied to get the achievement and touched by experiencing trip with my parents again. Compared with academic writing, digital story is a way to show personal experiences and feelings instead of formal specific academic work. The main purpose of digital story is to convey and deliver the emotions of the author to the audience. Meanwhile, academic writing aims at expressing academic and specific views in a formal and strict expression for scientific use. As a result of different purposes of them, they have different characteristics of writing type. In digital story, the author could use delicate descriptions, particular framework, tortuous and vivid plot, lively characters to make the audience feel as if they were personally on the scene. On the other hand, academic writing should have clear thesis, specific and formal words, rigorous logic and exactly proper citation and quotation.
After finishing the video, I started to write the credits which focuses on the citation of the resources used in my digital story. I downloaded several images and music from Internet to diversify and perfect my story. With the learning of this course, I have had a sense of intellectual property which contains various types such as words, ideas protected by regulations and laws. When using others’ own ideas, words and even music and images, we have to cite them. Otherwise, the work may be accused of plagiarism. Thus, at the end of my video, I made a reference list to cite the sources of the downloaded images and music I used in my digital story. It is not only a way to conform to the norms but also a way to show the respect of the original author.

When I heard we are going to make a DST I was excited to make a DST. But as the quarter passed we were told to make a script of our Digital Story. Firstly I was very confused which topic I need to choose. Considering it as a long time first I thought I would describe my hometown. But I did not have the enough pictures to describe it. So I chose I would choose my topic as my life and life experience, which I have experienced. After submitting the script of the digital story we were told to record our digital story in our voice. I had some problem with the recording because I usually speak English very fast so the length of the voice was very short so I re-recorded my voice. And then we were told to make a digital story by combining our pictures and our voice. In this class I learned new software named imovie. It was a good experience to learn new software. And at the end of the quarter we had a presentation of showing out DST to our class. And with the DST project going on we used to write blogs and also used to summarize the article given by the professor.

We need to be careful to use the material, which I used to make my DST. I downloaded picture, and I cited them to protect the intellectual property. Thus I would say we need to fulfill our responsibility of citing the sources. As the material is available from the Internet, we need to cite the source so the author gets proper credits for his work.

I made my digital story by following steps: selecting what kind of topic to write down, writing the script to recite, collect the pictures and music which suit to my story, combining the pictures, music and the recited story to form the video clip, then put the reference list in the end of the story. I found that selecting the picture for DST is the most interesting step because I remembered some portion of my trip to Philippine, while reciting the story script is the most difficult part for me because of the hardness to pronounce English in the right way. I spend almost an hour to record it.

When the video clip is created to provide the idea or experience, it is very important to ponder the purpose of the products the creator has. For example, a student is about to use a music which was composed for commercial, or to earn money, s/he must purchase it to use in the story. If s/he used the music without paying money, it should be punished even if the reference list was shown. In this course, I got not only how to make a simple video clip and the website providing copy right free materials, but also how to use intellectual property in a right way.

Blog #8 Digital Storytelling and Academic Writing

I can not believe this quarter is going to end so soon. And I can not believe that I can make a video about a period of my life by myself. This is a very reason I like this class, more challengeable but interesting. Firstly, at the beginning of the whole process of making my digital story telling, it was not easy to pick a topic. Because what I was going to do was not just a writting but wrtting and speaking combined with pictures. That means I need to choose a topic which has more than 20 pictures to support it and to make it unique. Those pictures are more meaningful if they originate from myself. I choosed "Bridges International" as my topic because of I am involved in this orgnization and I have time to take pictures about it. The entire story was wrote like a conclusion of my life experience in OSU with Bridges, so it was not very difficult. The most memorable time during making the digital story telling was the voice recording part. It was the first time for me do record my voice in such a professional condition—— whisper room. I was very excited about it and tried to do my best. For me, the most challenge part was the making video part. I've never used audacity and moive maker before, so it took me a lot of time to figure it out and combined my voice and background music and the pictures together. Compare with the normal writting, digital story telling has one more step of collecting and showing the pictures. They are similar in most of the place, such as using correct gramma, attracting reader and audience at the very beginning, connecting every paragraphs and making a reference list.
One of the similarity of digital story telling and writting is being careful about the intellectual property usage.
Cite the resouces of all the pictures which does not belong to you and make a reference list to show the original resource. I downloaded several pictures from the internet, and I gave each picture a website to let the audience know the source I used, in order to protect the intellectual property of the picture. The process of making this video let me learn that anything which helps to support your idea is free to use only when you cite the source.

In this quarter we’ve been working on the digital story telling for a really long time. My DST starts with searching the proper idea for the story. The first thought came to my mind is the place I spent my childhood in. so I didn’t take me so much time to make this decision. After this, the second step was to structure my story. This took me a bit long time because there are so many things I want to put in my story. So the process of screening the content which is most attractive to the audience might be a challenge for me. Then according to my draft I search the related photos online or find out from my own pictures. During this process credits of other people’s pictures caused me a little trouble too. The process of recording my story actually went quite well, there is not big problem came out when I editing my MP3 file. And the final move is to combine everything together to a movie file. In this whole process I don’t feel too many obstacles, but still it needs to be done with enough patient and care. Some parts of DST are similar to the academic writing because proper citation is needed for any reference material. But still it is different as it is your own story. So for me there is less restriction when doing the DST.

About the intellectual property in the DST i believe the things that we need to care are the resource of your picture and music. The link or addresses of those things are necessary as for the reference list in the end. I learned from this that we need to we have to show our respect to the original owner during at anytime.

In today’s English class, our Teacher Benson let us show everyone’s Digital story and I think everyone does a good job. Though doing this digital storytelling, I learn a lot of things like how to use audacity and movie maker, and copyright. At first, we make an out line about our DST and then write a whole DST essay. Afterward, we did the most interesting and important part of the process, go to the digital studio and do the recording. I practice lots of times and when I go into the studio, I still feel nervous. But after I try it for a few times, my voice becomes better. When I finish my recording and go out of the studio, I feel a little giddy because I reading a lot and lacking of the oxygen. After that, I edit it and then collect some of the pictures from my hard dish and search other pictures and the music online, at the same, note down the website of the pictures and background music. In the end, I put the pictures, recording, and music together in the movie maker and export it with the WMV format. I think the most difficult and challenge part is editing the recording and using the movie maker. It is hard to use the movie maker and audacity because if you make a little mistake, you have to do a lot of work to correct it. But after I practiced it, I make it more perfect.

Though doing DST, I found that intellectual property is a very important thing in US. I need to note down the website of every picture and music I download online and paste it to my DST. Also, I first use the “creative commons” in my works. If I am not doing this, I will infringe the intellectual property, so it is very important.

In English 106 when Eric said that all students need to create their own digital stories by video, I was so exciting in the fact that this will be my first time. I got no problem with my writing, but the funny thing in this project that I have never recorded my voice on my whole life. I was thinking what I'm going to present to my classmates, so they can get a picture about my life. Then I decided to talk about my trip to the desert which starts every winter break. On the other hand, there were two significant challenging with my digital story. First of all, the only step that was difficult for me is recoding the sound. In addition to that, the other thing is the Windows Movie Maker which I know nothing about it, but now I'm very good with that. Moreover, I didn't find pictures belong to my story and then I took many pictures from the internet. Some students are confused between writing essay and tell story. I definitely feel the same thing, but I would say that writing essay relates to the digital story only when there is a good way to put them on one piece. From the digital story, you are using more than one sense I mean the audiences can use their eyes and ears because the music and pictures. However, academic writing has only one sense which is the eye by the words.

The most important step for every essay or story is citing the sources. Personally, I got many pictures from Google and I put the references at the end of my story. Before this class if I picked any picture or music I don't cite the Web site because of the different cultures around the world. I consider that a good thing since others worked and they don't need others to take their work without giving them credits

In this beginning of the quarter, we will plane to make a digital storytelling and present it at the end of the class. At first, I worried about a story, because I do not have any interesting story to tell our class. As many people said, I live in the common world with normal daily life without interesting, so choosing topic is the most difficult thing during DST. Also, another difficulty was that I do not have enough images included in the story after decided the topic which was the journey in Sydney. I had took a lot of picture in Sydney, but I do not came with images in the U.S. However, my brother upload the image on the internet, so this problem was clearly solved by my brother's efforts. During this project, the most interesting thing was also images. I spent a lot of time to search images on the internet, especially Google web site, and there were many funny images. I just want to find "good bye" but one of images show man who hangover in the sofa, so finding images on the internet was very interest. Through the DST, I can find some kind of similarity between writing and making video. Both writing and DST have a Intellectual properties, so I should quote some images or music which found on the internet after finished video by using credit. However, I do not consider plagiarism in the DST, because it was my own word and expressions.

For this project, I use the image which founded on the internet. At first, I do not think about credit to cite the image, because images on the internet are common and used by many people. However, after I leaned plagiarism, I understand that illegally using images also kind of plagiarism. This is because, the Image have intellectual property likewise writing, so when I use images which is not mine, I should cite the images.

First of all, I wanted to use my personal experience to show China’s improvements. It would be a epic story. However, I found that it was so difficult to handle and I didn’t have enough time. Finally, I tried to choose a topic about travel. It would be more familiar for me and easy to handle. I have enough photos to show what had happened in those amazing places and I have a lot of good stories to tell. I wanted to make sure that no body saw those pictures or views before. XinJiang province in China is like Alaska State in United States. I'm pretty confidence that even most of my Chinese classmates didn't know that place very well. So, The Trip Of XinJiang Province, that's my choice. Technology issue always was the most challenging part for me when I make the DST. I always got some small troubles about that. And recording my voice is the most interesting part. It was a lot of fun. After recording my DST, I even could sing some songs in the whisper room.

Most of those photos are mine. Just 3 of pictures have been downloaded from the internet. However, I still need to be careful to cite the resources in the last page, even no body will charge me. I want to follow the western world’s rule. It’s good for my future study. It’s a good experience.

When I first heard we were going to make a digital story as our biggest assignment in this quarter, I was nervous and worried, because I am not good at using any programs from computer. It took me a while to figure out how to use Audacity and Movie Maker even though Dr. Bloch had showed us the basic skills for these programs. I kept rerecording my voice for my digital story, because I wanted to make it look good, I wanted my audiences to enjoy the digital story. However, it was hard to schedule the whisper room at SEl, because we had two classes need to use the whisper room, and I was not sure about my audiences can understand my digital story when they watch it. I had a lot idea on my first draft of the digital story. But I could not make a main point of view in my digital story because of tons of thing that I wanted to put into my digital story. I think that is different from writing an academic essay. Finding images and music was not hard for me and the digital story I made. Somehow I enjoyed looking for pictures from my computer for the digital story.

During the process of making my digital story, I learned how to use MLA style to cite my intellectual property correctly. I use MLA style to cite my sources since high school, but I always confuse about which one should go first, and I forget to put them in alphabet order all the time. I downloaded music and few pictures from the internet and know how to make a good reference on my work after this assignment. It was a helpful assignment for me to learn having originality but also follow copyrights and use the right technology to give credit.

Friday is the final presentation of digital story, which we prepare for the whole quarter. I think the procedure was pretty complex, including blogging, searching pictures and music, polishing our digital story, recording our story and making DST video. Things seemed confusing when I set about the work of digital story. First, I could not determine the topic which I should choose for digital story. Considering it for a long time, I thought I could write something about my hometown, the place which I was quite familiar with and began to write an outline of the story. Then I started writing the story with my explicit memory of my hometown, which was not a hard work. However, it came to be tough when I started to work on my digital story recording. I could not read it fluently and had to rerecord it by making an new appointment, which made me tired. The most interesting part was making a video. Before I mad the DST, I had found many nice pictures and a piece of music which I think was fit for my story. From my point of view, I think there are a lot of similarity between writing an academic essay and a digital story. For instance, we should credit others’ idea and the source. Substantially speaking, citing the sentence which is adapted from another article and using the pictures downloaded from internet are the same things in the process of protecting intellectual property and being exempting from punishment of violating of academic conduct. And the difference is that in digital story, we specifically tolk about our life and experience, but in academic essay, we should be objective and neutral.
We should essentially credit the pictures and the music in the process of making DST. Every thing from others should be cited in order to protect intellectual property, even though it comes from the communal resources such as internet. We should fulfill our responsibility by give the credit to others who did the original job.

Blog #8(The last one?) Junghyun Hong

When I heard that I need to make my DST in this quarter, I was glad because I already had a good subject to write and show to others. It was the mission trip to Costa-Rica during last summer break. I don’t need to try to remember old memories and to find old pictures. My story was about just 2month ago and I had brought my digital camera to mission-trip, so, I had all of pictures. Also, I already experienced to make a movie about the trip somewhat similar DST for presentation to church people (It wasn’t same. My DST isn’t plagiarized one.) So, I chose favorite pictures and wrote the story with my fresh memory. However, when I tried to write the script, It was hard to organize whole story to 5 minutes long. I had to choose which stories are put in and out. When I wrote it first, it was 7 minutes long story, so, I had to draw out minor stories. However, after drawing out, my story became a short but clear. I felt that DST script is little different with an academic essay. When I wrote it, I don’t need to worry plagiarism because DST is about my experience. Overall, making DST was interesting and I think it is a good chance to show my experience.

I felt that I have to be careful when I use other’s intellectual property like pictures and songs. Even though DST is based on my story, I needed other’s sources to make my DST. Also, I needed to make reference list; Song’s name and the source of pictures. These things were wired because most of all universities in Korea don’t think using other’s sources for non-profit work. From this DST assignment, I realize that every what I make and send should include references and I have to concern other’s intellectual properties.
