In the story “Drilling Sajama” (URL: http://digitalstory.osu.edu/movies/Landis-f.html ),the author Carol Landis addresses the research by the Geologist Dr. Lonnie Thompson about tropical mountain ice field in Bolivia, and his outstanding communication skill as scientist. She explained that he must get the permission not only from the government but also the people there, to achieve his research. The video illustrate he had a negotiation with natives to have a survey, facing their strong belief regarding glacier as god. The story emphasized that finally he and his team were allowed to have survey on the mountain due to his extraordinary skill.
I consider her her story to be very good with devices she used in it, even though there are some difficult vocabulary to understand for students from foreign countries. This story obviously describes the excellence of Dr. Lonnie as both scientific and cultural reasons. I also noticed that this story was mainly consisted by Lonnie’s own experience with the same order as he had passed. This practice enables listener to follow the story friendly. In the part of story, she also focused on how to express the rate of value by providing the graphs on the picture. I could easily recognize how the number moved statistically than just reading it. However, she did not put enough pauses while reading it; therefore, it may cause listeners to follow in a bit difficult way. For these reasons, I evaluate her twists on the story such as composing the story in time order, writting the draft with Lonnie’s experiences, showing the graph to allow listener to understand the contents easier.
