My Scholarship to New Zealand

Every year Abu Dhabi government gives high school good students scholarships to study English language in English spoken countries. In 2008 I was in a sophomore student in model high school. I had been good student so they chose me to have the scholarship to go to Auckland, New Zealand. Fortunately, I figured out that 3 of my friends were going with me. Therefore, I got more excited and I knew that I must find a way to convince my father to allow me to travel. I understood that my father was afraid to let me go so I started to give him reasons: first, this is a rare opportunity and wouldn’t happen again. Second, My friends are going with me. Third, there are supervisor for every 0 student so he can focus more in the student. Finally, I could persuade my father. I started to get ready.

The day of travel came that I was expected. I met my friends at the point of assembly; we were so excited and chatting with each other. When we got in the plane, everybody slept but the connecting point interrupted their sleeping. The connecting point was Sultanate of Brunei. We got out of the airport and went to a hotel. I couldn’t sleep so I walk around. We counted our way to Auckland.

Finally, after 19 hours in plane we arrived. There was a bus driver waiting for us to take each one of us to his home- stay. I was wondering how is my home-stay? Are they nice? And many questions revolve in my mind. Eventually, I arrived to home, chatted a little bit with the home-stay, and then I slept early because I have school the other day. I went to school for the placement test, then I returned to the neighborhood of the home-stay house.

I found western springs park, which was wonderful. After a while, my friends and I started to get used to the place so we decided to go waiheke Island in a weekend. We paid for a tour around the island by bus. It was very good trip. When I came back home, I discovered that the father of home stay raise in the island. Days passed quickly and suddenly we found ourselves on the last day of studying. We made a party. In the following morning was time for goodbye to the home-stay. This was my scholarship to study abroad.

  1. Hi Saeed.
I was surprised to see your story because I was also there in 2008. It was the program for students to have a chance practicing English skill, created by Auckland University and Hokkaido University, where I am from. I had been studying English the school called English Language Academy, one of institutions of Auckland universiry, for two weeks. I remember it was in the middle of September. So I know where your picture was taken, and visited the zoo next to the park. Your story reminds me of my staying there also.

  4. Saeed,

I am curious about your experiences from your staying NZ,so can you show me more in DST?

Maybe we were in NZ almost the same period,I remember that Lehman Shock occurred around then. But we didnot the same school, there was a student from ksa though.

Anyway, I also like home stay. They are very kind to me and took me to many place and give me some experience. I stayed the place called "Te Atatu South", it is a bit far from Auckland. Do you remember about where you stayed?
